Audi owners ask one question more than almost any other: "my car has MMI and a CarPlay menu β€” why isn't it wireless?" The answer depends on two things: which generation of MMI your car runs, and whether the original buyer ticked one specific option box. This guide covers the Audis most common on European and UK roads β€” A3, A4, A5, Q2, Q3, Q5, A6 and Q7 β€” and gives you a ten-second test that settles the question for your exact car.

The option box that decides everything

In Europe, CarPlay and Android Auto arrive in an Audi through a feature called the Audi smartphone interface β€” and for years it was an optional extra on many trims rather than standard equipment. Two otherwise identical A4s from the same year can differ: one has CarPlay, the other has nothing but Bluetooth. Audi began offering the smartphone interface around the 2016–2017 model years (the B9-generation A4 and the second-generation Q7 were among the first), and it spread across the range from there, becoming standard on most trims in later years.

This matters because a wireless adapter upgrades an existing wired CarPlay connection β€” it can't create one. If your Audi never had the smartphone interface fitted, no adapter will add it.

MMI generations at a glance

Audi doesn't badge its infotainment generations on the screen, but the rough timeline looks like this:

  • MIB2 (roughly 2016–2020): the A3 8V facelift, A4/A5 B9, Q2, Q5 and Q7 of this era. Wired CarPlay and Android Auto where the smartphone interface was specified β€” wireless was generally not offered on these systems.
  • MIB2+ (from around 2018–2019): fitted to the newer A6, A7, A8, Q8 and e-tron with the dual-touchscreen layout, plus the second-generation Q3 (from around 2019). Audi's own documentation lists wireless CarPlay as available on several of these models from the 2019–2020 model years, though availability varied by market and options.
  • MIB3 (from around 2020–2021): the A3 8Y, facelifted A4/A5 and Q5, and newer models. Wireless CarPlay became widely standard here from around the 2021 model year (the very first MIB3 cars were still wired-only), and wireless Android Auto followed on later model years.

Model-year boundaries differ between European and North American markets, and mid-cycle software changes blur them further β€” so treat the years above as a guide, not a guarantee.

The ten-second test for your exact car

Rather than decoding option codes, do this: plug your phone into the car's USB data port with a good cable. If CarPlay or Android Auto launches on the MMI screen, your Audi has the smartphone interface β€” and a wireless adapter will work. If nothing happens beyond charging, the interface likely isn't fitted, and an adapter won't help. Still unsure? Run your car through our compatibility checker and we'll confirm before you order.

Going wireless in a wired-only Audi

If your Audi passed the cable test but runs MIB2 β€” so wired-only β€” the HexaCharge Complete Kit adds wireless CarPlay and Android Auto through the existing USB port. The adapter plugs in once and stays hidden; from then on your phone connects automatically within seconds of starting the car, while the MagSafe mount holds and charges it. We've covered how adapters work in more detail in our guide to adding wireless CarPlay to a wired-only car.

Mounting a phone in an Audi cabin

Audi interiors tend to have slim, wide vents and a low dash line, which suits a vent-mounted charger in most models. In cars where the vents sit low or angle awkwardly β€” common in the Q2 and some A3 trims β€” a dash position keeps the phone closer to your sightline: the HexaDash telescopic mount places it above the dash without blocking the screen. Right-hand-drive owners in the UK and Ireland can find position-by-position advice in our right-hand-drive mounting guide.

The bottom line

If your Audi is from roughly 2016 onwards and the smartphone interface was specified, you have CarPlay β€” and if it's a wired MIB2 car, an adapter takes it wireless. Newer MIB3 cars from around 2021 on increasingly have wireless built in, so check the cable test and your settings before buying anything. Wherever you are, shipping on every Malinto order is free worldwide with duties paid, so UK and EU orders arrive with nothing extra to pay.
