Toyota builds some of the most popular cars in Europe, but its CarPlay story is more complicated than most brands'. Depending on the year and the multimedia system fitted, your Toyota might have no CarPlay at all, wired-only CarPlay, or fully wireless CarPlay from the factory. This guide walks through which models and years work, and how to upgrade the ones that are wired-only.

Toyota's CarPlay timeline: later than you'd think

Toyota was one of the last major manufacturers to adopt Apple CarPlay. In the United States it arrived with the 2019 model year on volume models such as the Camry, RAV4 and Corolla. In Europe and the UK the rollout came slightly later and in two steps.

First came the Toyota Touch 2 era. European cars built around 2019 with Touch 2 generally shipped without smartphone mirroring, but Toyota offered an official dealer-installed upgrade: in the UK, the MY19 Corolla (all body styles and grades) and MY19–MY20 RAV4 (all grades except Icon) could have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added at a Toyota centre for a nominal fee. From the 2020 model year, Touch 2 cars — including the Yaris launched in 2020 — came with wired CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Then came Toyota Smart Connect, which debuted on the Yaris Cross in 2021 and reached the facelifted Corolla and C-HR for 2022 before rolling out across the European range (Aygo X, RAV4, and the newer Yaris and C-HR). Smart Connect brought a faster processor, cloud navigation and — importantly — wireless Apple CarPlay as standard. Android Auto launched on Smart Connect as a wired connection; wireless Android Auto has since reached many cars through software updates, but early builds may still require a cable, so it's worth checking your specific car.

Quick reference by model (European market)

As a rule of thumb: Corolla — wired CarPlay from MY2020 (or MY19 with the dealer retrofit), wireless from the 2022 facelift with Smart Connect. Yaris — wired from its 2020 launch, wireless on later Smart Connect versions. Yaris Cross — Smart Connect from launch in most grades, with wireless CarPlay on the 9-inch display. C-HR — wired on late first-generation cars, wireless from the 2022 update onward. RAV4 — retrofit or standard wired CarPlay on MY19–MY21 cars, wireless on later Smart Connect models. Aygo X — launched in 2022 with smartphone integration across most trims. Trim and build-date variations exist within every model year, so treat these as starting points rather than guarantees.

The 30-second self-test

Rather than decoding brochures, test your own car: plug your iPhone into the car's data USB port with a good cable. If CarPlay launches on the screen, your Toyota has wired CarPlay — and a wireless adapter will work in it. If nothing happens, your car predates Toyota's CarPlay support (or the retrofit was never done), and an adapter that converts wired to wireless won't help. You can also run your car through our compatibility checker in under a minute.

Making a wired-CarPlay Toyota wireless

If your Toyota falls in the 2019–2022 wired-only window, the HexaCharge Complete Kit converts that factory wired connection into wireless CarPlay or Android Auto. The adapter plugs into the USB port your cable normally uses, your phone pairs over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and CarPlay starts automatically when you get in. The kit's MagSafe mount also charges your phone while you drive, which solves the one real drawback of going wireless.

Mounting in a Toyota cabin

Most Toyota dashboards, from the Yaris to the RAV4, have round or rectangular vents that suit a vent-clip mount, and the Corolla's low dash line keeps the phone below your sightline. If you'd rather keep the vents free — useful in summer traffic — the HexaDash telescopic dash mount positions the same MagSafe head on the dashboard instead.

The bottom line

If your European Toyota is from 2020 or later — or a 2019 Corolla or RAV4 with the official retrofit — it has CarPlay, and the cable test above tells you in seconds. Smart Connect cars from 2022 onward are already wireless for iPhone; everything else with wired CarPlay can go wireless with an adapter. If you're weighing up an older car, our adapter compatibility guide covers the general rules for any brand.
