Wireless CarPlay for Renault: Clio, Captur & Mégane Guide

Renault sells more Clios and Capturs in Europe than almost any rival in their segments, yet wireless CarPlay is a surprisingly recent arrival in the range. Whether your Renault supports it out of the box — or needs a small adapter — comes down to which of three infotainment systems your car runs: R-Link 2, Easy Link, or the newer Google-based OpenR Link. Here is how to tell them apart, model by model.

The quick answer by system

Easy Link (most Clio V and Captur II cars from 2019 onwards) supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but only over a USB cable. OpenR Link (Mégane E-Tech, the facelifted Captur, and other recent models) has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto built in — no adapter needed. R-Link 2 (Mégane IV and other pre-2019 models) varies with software version: some cars gained wired CarPlay, the earliest ones never did. Renault Clio

The fifth-generation Clio launched in 2019 with Renault's Easy Link system on a 7-inch or 9.3-inch portrait touchscreen, and both CarPlay and Android Auto are supported across the range — wired, via the USB port. That makes the Clio V an ideal candidate for a wireless adapter: plug the adapter into that same USB port once, and your phone connects automatically every time you get in. The new sixth-generation Clio moves to OpenR Link, so higher trims of the newest cars get wireless connectivity from the factory — but the hundreds of thousands of Easy Link Clios on European roads will stay wired unless you add an adapter.

Renault Captur

The second-generation Captur (2019 onwards) mirrors the Clio: Easy Link, 7-inch or 9.3-inch screen, wired CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2024 facelift changed the picture — higher trims gained a 10.4-inch Google-based OpenR Link display, which handles CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly on its own. So the rule of thumb is: pre-facelift Captur, adapter recommended; facelifted Captur with the large portrait screen, you likely already have wireless built in.

Renault Mégane

The Mégane needs the most care. The combustion Mégane IV (2016–2022) uses R-Link 2, and CarPlay support depends on the software version fitted — earlier cars often lack it entirely, while later builds added wired CarPlay and Android Auto. Because trim and software vary so much, run this 30-second self-test: connect your iPhone or Android phone with a good USB cable. If CarPlay or Android Auto launches on the screen, your car has wired smartphone integration and a wireless adapter will work. If nothing appears, an adapter won't help — the head unit itself lacks support. The all-electric Mégane E-Tech (2022 onwards) is the opposite story: its OpenR Link system includes wireless CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, so no adapter is required.
