Wireless CarPlay for VW Golf, Polo & Tiguan: EU Guide

The Golf, Polo and Tiguan are three of Europe's most driven cars, so does wireless CarPlay work in my VW? is a question we get a lot. The answer depends almost entirely on which infotainment platform your car left the factory with — and the good news is that for most VWs built from late 2015 onwards, wireless CarPlay is either already on board or one small adapter away.

When did Volkswagen add CarPlay?

Volkswagen introduced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its App-Connect package on the second-generation MIB infotainment platform (MIB2), which started appearing in cars built from mid-2015 for the 2016 model year. One important caveat for European buyers: App-Connect was frequently an optional extra rather than standard equipment, particularly on entry trims with the smaller Composition displays. Two otherwise identical Golfs from the same year can differ — one with CarPlay, one without.

Golf: Mk7, Mk7.5 and Mk8

Golf 7 and 7.5 models (roughly 2015–2019 builds) with App-Connect support wired CarPlay only — the MIB2 system has no wireless mode, regardless of screen size. These are ideal candidates for a wireless adapter. The Golf 8 (2020 onwards) moved to the MIB3 platform, and most European versions ship with App-Connect Wireless, so wireless CarPlay works out of the box. That said, some early builds and specific trims left the factory wired-only, so it's worth confirming on your own car before assuming either way.

Polo: 2016 onwards

The Polo gained CarPlay support from 2016-model-year cars fitted with App-Connect, and the Mk6 Polo (2017 onwards) continued with wired CarPlay on MIB2-based systems. The 2021 facelift brought MIB3 and — on selected trims — wireless CarPlay. If your Polo is a 2016–2021 build with working wired CarPlay, an adapter converts it to wireless with no tools and no coding.

Tiguan: Mk2 and the 2020 facelift

The second-generation Tiguan (2016 onwards) offers wired CarPlay wherever App-Connect was specified. The 2020 facelift introduced MIB3 with wireless capability on many versions. As with the Golf, trim and build date matter more than the badge on the back.

The 60-second self-test

Because App-Connect availability varies by trim, year and market, the most reliable check is also the simplest: plug your iPhone into the car's data USB port with a cable. If CarPlay launches on the screen, your VW has wired CarPlay — and a wireless adapter will work. If nothing happens, App-Connect either wasn't specified or wasn't activated, and an adapter won't help until it is. You can also run your car through our compatibility checker for a quick answer.
