Škoda drivers ask us the same question more than almost any other group: my car has SmartLink, so why do I still have to plug in a cable for CarPlay? The answer depends heavily on which model year you drive. This guide covers the Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq — which years support wireless CarPlay from the factory, which are wired-only, and how to go wireless in the cars that aren't.

First, a quick primer on SmartLink

SmartLink is Škoda's umbrella name for phone mirroring — it bundles Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink into one feature. It began appearing on Škoda's MIB2-generation infotainment systems (Swing, Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus units) from around the 2016 model year. For most of its life, SmartLink was wired only: CarPlay worked, but only with your phone plugged into the USB port.

Wireless SmartLink arrived surprisingly late. Škoda first offered it on the Scala and Kamiq in 2019, and it reached the larger models over the following two years.

Škoda Octavia: Mk3 vs Mk4 is the dividing line

The fourth-generation Octavia (2020 onwards) supports wireless CarPlay natively on its touchscreen systems — if you drive a Mk4, you likely don't need an adapter at all.

The third-generation Octavia (2013–2020) is where it gets interesting. Cars from roughly 2016 onwards with MIB2 infotainment and the SmartLink option support CarPlay, but wired only. Earlier Mk3 cars with first-generation MIB1 units generally don't support CarPlay at all — and an adapter cannot add CarPlay to a head unit that never had it. Because SmartLink was an optional extra on many trims, two identical-looking Octavias can differ, so use the self-test below rather than assuming.

Škoda Superb and Kodiaq: wireless from model year 2021

The Superb (from 2015) and Kodiaq (revealed in 2016, on sale from 2017) offered wired SmartLink through most of their production runs. Škoda's own press material confirms that wireless SmartLink pairing arrived on the Superb, Kodiaq and Karoq with the new infotainment generation for the 2021 model year, on Bolero, Amundsen and Columbus systems. So a 2018 Kodiaq or a 2019 Superb with working wired CarPlay is exactly the kind of car a wireless adapter is made for.

The 10-second self-test

Software versions and optioned equipment vary too much to rely on year tables alone. So run this test: plug your iPhone into the car's USB data port with a cable. If CarPlay launches on the screen, your car has wired CarPlay — and a wireless adapter will work. If nothing happens, check that SmartLink is activated in the infotainment menu; if it's simply not there, an adapter won't add it. You can also run your car through our compatibility checker in under a minute, or read our broader adapter compatibility guide if you drive something else too.

Going wireless in a wired SmartLink Škoda

If your Škoda passed the self-test, setup is short: the HexaCharge Complete Kit's adapter plugs into the same USB port you use for the cable, pairs with your phone over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and from then on CarPlay starts automatically when you get in — phone in pocket, no cable. The kit also includes a MagSafe charging mount, which solves the other Škoda annoyance: nowhere sensible to put your phone while it charges.

How the HexaCharge wireless CarPlay adapter works in a Škoda — plug into USB, connect wirelessly

A mounting note for Škoda interiors: the Octavia's vent slats hold a vent mount well, but the Kodiaq and Superb have deeper dashboards where many drivers prefer a dash position closer to their sightline. The HexaDash telescopic dash mount is the tidy way to do that without blocking a vent.

Common Škoda-specific quirks

Three things worth knowing. First, use the USB port that carries data — in some Škodas one port is charge-only. Second, if CarPlay drops out after connecting, the usual fixes are the same as any car; our guide to CarPlay disconnection fixes walks through them. Third, wireless CarPlay uses marginally more phone battery than wired — with a charging mount attached this is a non-issue, and we've covered the details in our wired vs wireless comparison.

The short version

Octavia Mk4 (2020+): wireless built in. Octavia Mk3 from ~2016, Superb from 2015, Kodiaq from 2017 with SmartLink: wired CarPlay, adapter-ready. Pre-SmartLink MIB1 cars: no CarPlay, and an adapter won't change that. If the cable test works, you're one USB plug away from wireless.

We ship the HexaCharge Complete Kit worldwide with free shipping and duties paid, so UK and EU Škoda owners pay nothing extra at delivery.
